For Matias Madriaga, the journey to York University was one that crossed countries, cultures, and communities. Originally from Chile, his path included stops in Texas and Iowa before friends on the York University soccer team introduced him to a university that would ultimately become much more than his next destination.
"I always wanted to challenge myself by experiencing a new culture and continuing my journey in the United States," Matias shared. "Through those connections, I learned more about York and decided it was the right place for me to continue growing both personally and academically."
When Matias arrived in York, he hoped to receive a quality education, develop as a leader, and build relationships with people from different backgrounds. Those goals quickly became reality as he embraced campus life and the opportunities that came with studying far from home.
"The experience has been even better than I expected. Of course, there were challenges like being away from my family and adapting to a new culture, but those experiences helped me grow. I have learned so much, built meaningful relationships, and gained confidence in myself."
Wanting to continue growing as a leader, Matias enrolled in York University's Master of Organizational Leadership. The program strengthened his communication, critical thinking, and leadership skills while reinforcing the importance of leading with integrity, empathy, and purpose. At the same time, Matias served as a Graduate Assistant for York University Online, where he gained professional experience supporting students, collaborating with colleagues, and contributing to the department.
"Working as a Graduate Assistant with York University Online has been a very meaningful part of my journey at York. It has allowed me to gain a better understanding of how an online university operates and to develop important professional skills such as communication, organization, and teamwork."
Throughout his time at York, Matias credits professors, classmates, coworkers, coaches, and friends with helping shape his experience and encouraging his personal and professional growth. Earning his master's degree while balancing graduate school, his responsibilities with York University Online, and the challenges of being an international student stands among Matias's proudest accomplishments. He now looks forward to continuing his professional growth and embracing new leadership opportunities. When asked what advice he would give future international and graduate students, Matias didn't hesitate:
"Don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Get involved, ask questions, and take advantage of every opportunity you can. The experience will challenge you, but it will also help you grow in ways you never expected."
As Matias begins the next chapter of his journey, we celebrate not only everything he has accomplished but also the person he has been throughout his time at York. It has been a privilege to know him as both a student and a colleague, and we are grateful for the positive impact he has made on our department and university community.
