Master's in Healthcare Administration

Program Overview

The Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) will prepare individuals for professional management positions within healthcare institutions. The program integrates a pragmatic approach to the pedagogy of healthcare management systems, health policy, and public health. Students acquire a strong conceptualization of business analytics, finance, leadership, and strategies to utilize in managing healthcare venues.  By obtaining business acumen, technical knowledge, and real-world skills, students will glean the expertise to constructively and efficiently analyze problems, develop strategic solutions, and effectively communicate procedural data to fellow healthcare professionals while serving as a healthcare administrator.

Program Goals

Our goals/outcomes for graduates of the Master of Healthcare Administration degree program:

  1. The graduate candidate will apply ethical principles in professional settings.
  2. The graduate candidate will evaluate multiple approaches in healthcare programs in a professional context and communicate effective change.
  3. The graduate candidate will demonstrate proficiency in healthcare policy, development, and problem-solving.
  4. The graduate candidate will identify best practices in healthcare professions and settings using effective strategic planning strategies within a variety of contexts.
  5. The graduate candidate will be able to effectively analyze the role and responsibilities of a healthcare administrator, understand models, and show an ability to implement those frameworks.

 

 

 

Courses

The Master of Healthcare Administration is a 36-credit hour program consisting of 12 courses.  Active students may transfer up to 6 qualified credit hours toward the degree.

Navigating in a Diverse Society

Navigating in a Diverse Society

GRS 5341 - This course provides students with the awareness, knowledge and skills required of professional leaders, supervisors, managers, counselors, and educators if they are to be effective in a pluralistic and diverse society. This course prepares students to be multi-culturally competent. Diversity and identity issues, multicultural models and frameworks will be explored in relation to their impact on therapeutic, instructional, and supervisory relationships.

Program Planning & Evaluation

Program Planning & Evaluation

GRS 5331 - Program Planning presents an overview of the process for designing, presenting and evaluating programs in a variety of fields. This course provides instruction and practice in designing and implementing high quality programs. This essential skills learning is for York University Online professionals to build skills in the areas of program development, evaluation, and influence reporting. The course includes training on active learning, practical application, and practice in developing evaluation tools to measure program impact.

Analytics Driven Project Management

BIL 6321 - This course requires an examination of the methods used to make informed decisions and project management strategies. Students will apply project management process through the framework of planning, estimating, leading, and monitoring how to optimize business models and intellectual capital.

Budgeting & Finance

Budgeting & Finance

MOL 6321 - This course is designed to provide the non-accountant and financial manager with the knowledge necessary to interact with professionals from those disciplines. The majority of the material draws from the theory and practice of financial management. Sufficient accounting background is provided to enable the student to understand and work with information provided by accounting and finance professionals. Emphasis is placed on understanding terms, concepts, and uses of information provided by these functions rather than on the actual performance of the calculations.

Building & Managing Teams

Building & Managing Teams

MOL 6351 - Team building, teamwork, and team leading draws information from a wide variety of disciplines to introduce students to the ever important topic of teaming. This interdisciplinary course is designed to provide the student with an awareness and understanding of current issues relating to the nature and tasks of collaborative leadership behavior. The student is asked to identify an issue or problem and practice leadership by developing and implementing a team project.

Crisis Communication & Leadership

MOL 6361 - This course examines the variables involved in crisis planning, communication and management. The organization’s vulnerabilities, the environment in which it thrives, the stakeholders who can influence its operation and the strategies best suited to maintaining or enhancing its reputation will be examined. The media plays a crucial role in crisis management and we will discuss this factor throughout the course. We will consider how the media acts as a catalyst as well as intermediary in this process. By the conclusion of the course, participants should have developed a deeper understanding of the range of crises facing organizations, an enhanced appreciation of communication tactics that can be brought to bear in such situations and a greater familiarity with the historical antecedents of current crises.

Ethics & Professional Responsibilities

MOL 5321 - This course will provide a values-based approach to ethical professionalism and provide a method of thinking about and dealing with ethical issues in the workplace. The course will also provide discussion of what a profession is and what it means to act professionally and ethically. It will include discussion of the features of moral reasoning and provide a case resolution method for dealing with ethical issues of the workplace. The course will cover in-depth those values central to the moral life of any professional: integrity, respect for persons, justice, compassion, beneficence, and responsibility.

Healthcare Economics, Politics, and Policy

Healthcare Economics, Politics, and Policy

This course applies economic theory to the healthcare industry and its growth and decline. Macro and Microeconomics will be analyzed using cases and frameworks influenced by laws, pricing, population demand, stakeholders, and organizational policy when considering how healthcare is regulated, budgeted, invested, and strategically planned.

Healthcare Marketing and Media

Healthcare Marketing and Media

This course addresses the role and function of marketing goals as a part of strategic planning and processes to ensure their successful implementation. Analysis of ethics, market research, data analysis interpretation, and technology will be applied to marketing principles with the goal of influencing patients, employees, and allied healthcare partners.

Operations Management for Health Organizations

Operations Management for Health Organizations

This course applies quantitative analysis management tools to assist in nullifying operational challenges impacting goods and services provided by health-related service organizations. Throughout the course, students will engage and explore operational systems to assist in enhancing ergonomics, research, risk management, supply chain management, and technology within a medical setting.

Public Health and Population Management

Public Health and Population Management

This course introduces students to concepts, structures, and activities in both public health and population management best practices. A range of topics, historical and current issues, and frameworks that work alongside health systems, policies, and practices will be addressed.

U.S. Healthcare Systems and Laws

U.S. Healthcare Systems and Laws

This course investigates the impact of legal factors and legislation which influence best practices in care and policy-making processes. Decision-making, viewpoints and relationships among professionals, patients and management will be examined.
