History Is Made - YU's Principal Endorsement Program

York University has a new chapter in its history annals.  For the first time, students in the Master of Arts in Education (MAE) degree program have completed an approved pathway for a Principal Endorsement to their educator licenses.  They can be certified building leaders.  The MAE with a concentration in Educational Leadership/Principal Endorsement began in January 2022. Three candidates, two from Nebraska and one from Oklahoma, have now completed the program and can now apply for Principal Endorsement in their respective states!

Greg Smith, one of the recent graduates, stated, "Looking back, it is evident that God led me to enroll and complete this program, which opened the door for my new role at Nebraska Christian Schools in Central City. As I transition into the K-12 Principal role, I am confident that the professors, coursework, and internship experiences have well-equipped me for this next step in my educational journey."  This MAE program, fully accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and the Nebraska Department of Education, prepares students to be building-level principals at grade levels PK-8, 7–12, or PK-12.  They follow a curriculum aligned with the National Educational Leadership Preparation Standards and the Nebraska Teacher and Principal Performance Standards.

One of the best parts of this program is that students will be paired with a faculty mentor who has building-level experience. Professor and mentor, Dr. Ron Mitchell, upon learning of this new Educational Leadership (EDL) pathway at York University was eager to participate: “I asked to become part of the faculty and encouraged teachers under my supervision to consider the program. I have been extremely pleased with the program and the excellent education it provides.”  Brad Moser, President of Clarksville Christian School, elaborated, "York University has made an incredible difference for the faculty and staff members at our school.  I have witnessed firsthand the life-changing impact that York University can make on individuals and organizations.”  The MAE faculty and EDL mentors have a wealth of knowledge to guide students to successful leadership roles in diverse public and private settings as educators and administrators.

The Master's degree is 100% online and there are no extra costs for textbooks or course fees.  The Principal Endorsement pathway will follow either a 36 or 45 credit hour plan and require 250 clock hours of internship, which is easily spread out during the entire program.  Kelsey Nabity, another recent graduate, relates, "You learn from experienced professionals about real-world education topics. The online platform allows flexibility while working full time and being a parent." The MAE Program Director is Dr. Cheryl Couch.  Dr. Couch believes challenging and relevant programming is essential to equip people for the "greatest mission field in America today: our children's classrooms."  When it comes to educating our educators, her goal, along with the rest of the York University team, is to prepare students for their professional roles and, more importantly, to follow the calling God leads them on through life’s journey.
