Internship Course EXP303
Internship courses are designed to help students learn and apply skills that are necessary to today’s workplace. An internship experience can offer the important benefit of career exploration, be an excellent resume builder, and lead to a full-time job, but it is important to remember that academic credit is awarded for the learning achieved, not for the work experience alone. The primary purpose of doing an academic internship is to better understand the theories, ideas, and practices of your discipline, industry, career interests, or major by actively engaging in a hands-on, work-based learning experience.
Students are eligible for up to six (6) credit hours toward their degree, however, only three (3) credit hours can be taken within a semester. Students taking the internship course twice must prove that they are engaging with a new experience within an organization (for example, a new title or responsibilities) or serve with a new organization. Internships must be taken in the semester when a majority of the work is completed. Internships are graded pass/fail.
- To be eligible for an internship, a student must:
-
Be an undergraduate student who has completed 48 undergraduate credits.
-
Be in good academic standing at York University with a minimum of 2.0 GPA.
-
Have their primary advisor’s approval to participate in the internship.
-
Have the Internship Coordinator’s approval by submitting the proper paperwork.
- Job/Internship Eligibility Requirements
-
Students may be paid for an internship, but may not receive internship credit for their ongoing job.
-
Students applying for internship credit at an organization where they are regularly employed must indicate on the application form how the internship work hours and duties exceed the normal job requirements and ensure that they have a distinct supervisor from their regular job duties.
-
The experience must be an extension of the classroom.
-
Internships located with the help of the Internship Coordinator through Handshake are preferred, but other internships can be considered.
*If you have an internship lined up, you will need to pick up an internship approval form from Tonya Carr on the second floor of the ARC at Levitt.
