Using and Understanding CopyLeaks

What is CopyLeaks for Canvas?

Canvas integrates the powerful plagiarism detection capabilities of CopyLeaks to identify instances of plagiarism and AI-generated text within student submissions. When instructors and educators upload assignments or papers onto Canvas, CopyLeaks analyzes the content using sophisticated AI algorithms to compare the submitted work against a vast database of sources, including academic journals, books, and online publications. CopyLeaks will detect exact matches and employ advanced techniques to uncover paraphrased or reworded content, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of the submitted work. Furthermore, CopyLeaks employs its AI expertise to recognize patterns commonly associated with AI-generated text, allowing Canvas to flag potential instances of automated text generation. By leveraging the collaborative efforts of Canvas and CopyLeaks, educational institutions can effectively promote academic honesty and uphold the integrity of student work.

Enabling CopyLeaks on an Assignment:

Enabling CopyLeaks on each assignment is mandatory to ensure academic integrity and detect instances of plagiarism or AI-generated text. Below are the steps to enabling CopyLeaks:

  1. After creating an assignment, click the Edit button

  2. Turn on the Online assignment submission option
    1. Set Submission Type to Online
    2. Enable Text Entry and/or File Uploads
  3. Enable CopyLeaks functionality
    1. Set Plagiarism Review to Copyleaks Plagiarism Checker
  4. Save and publish assignment

What does CopyLeaks Do?

Assignment Flags:

In the Canvas assignment lists, CopyLeaks flags serve as vital indicators to instructors and educators, highlighting potential cases of plagiarism or AI-generated text within student submissions. When the CopyLeaks integration is enabled, the system scans each assignment and compares the content against a database of sources. If CopyLeaks detects suspicious similarities or patterns, it promptly raises a flag next to the corresponding assignment. These flags act as visual cues, alerting instructors to potentially problematic submissions that warrant further examination. By leveraging the CopyLeaks flags on the Canvas assignment lists, educators can efficiently prioritize their attention, focus on potential academic misconduct, and take appropriate actions to maintain academic integrity.

What does each assignment flag mean?

Once an assignment has been scanned for plagiarism on Canvas, a color will appear next to the report. This is how to interpret the colors you see:
