York College recently announced the addition of psychology and criminal justice degrees to their online program offerings.
These additions will allow York College to better serve students in growing fields for online learning.
A bachelor’s degree in psychology gives students the ability to pursue a wide variety of career choices, says Dr. Jaclyn Spivey, chair of the Department of Behavioral Sciences at YC. “Combining the Christian worldview with the content of a psychology degree is something I feel strongly about, and I am excited about the opportunity to share this with our students, both online and traditional.”
Associate Professor of Criminal Justice and Division Chair of Professional Programs Dr. Billy Lones is excited about the addition of the degrees, as well. “This will allow us to help more students, especially those working full-time, with their educational needs and goals. Additionally, the faculty for these courses possess a wealth of practical professional experience in addition to their academic expertise.”
Also available online from York College are a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master of education degree in curriculum and instruction.
Associate Dean for Online Instruction Lisa Menke says that attending classes online at York College is a great option for students who need more flexibility in their schedules than traditional classrooms offer. “Most of our full-time online students are working adults, some with small children at home,” says Menke. “Having the flexibility to attend class between shifts at work or while kids are asleep makes all the difference in our students achieving their academic goals.”

The proliferation of online learning in the past decade has resulted in a vast sea of options for the non-traditional learner. So much so that as of 2012 there were two million students attending college 100% online and 96% of universities at that time offered online courses.
With undergraduate degree programs from Accounting to Zoology available online, it’s easy for students to find a program that aligns with their future career goals.
A five-year study, issued in 2011 by Columbia University’s Community College Research Center, tracked 51,000 students enrolled in Washington State community and technical colleges. The study showed that students in community colleges came to higher education woefully underprepared for the demands of being a successful college student as they lacked basic time management and study skills and were deficient in core curriculum areas such as math and reading. The study further found that when those students took online courses, the rate of failure or dropping out were very high.
What does this study prove, exactly? It proves a number of things, actually. First, it proves that online learning is not for every student. Secondly, it shows that providers of online learning should consider implementing a set of criteria for students considering an online course option. Finally, it proves that students need to be better equipped for success in the online classroom.
Here are five tips for online students, or for anyone considering an online course option, that will improve the learning experience.
1. Budget your study time carefully. Online courses come in several different lengths, although most are six or eight weeks in duration. The developers of your course have likely taken the material from a traditional, classroom-based course that spans an entire academic semester and condensed it to fit the accelerated format. Students who do not plan their time carefully will fall behind within the first week and, as the pace continues, the work can become quickly overwhelming. Devote some time ahead of any class start date to sit down and budget your time. Devote blocks of time each day to your online course and do not allow anything to interfere with that time.
2. Order your textbook as soon as your enrollment is confirmed. This is absolutely critical to your success. If you do not have your textbook before your class begins you are doomed to fall behind almost immediately.
3. Contact your instructor before class begins. Introduce yourself, ask for the course syllabus and ask about required textbooks. Share with your instructor any concerns you have and ask questions. Your instructor is a key part of your support network and is interested in helping you succeed.
4. Participate and collaborate. Don’t be the student who in the traditional classroom sits in the back row and tries to be invisible. Participation in group discussions and collaboration on group assignments will boost your comfort level in the online classroom.
5. Speak up and ask questions. If your instructor never hears from you with questions or concerns throughout the duration of your online class, they will assume everything is going smoothly for you. If you are feeling concerned about an assignment or have questions you should contact your instructor right away. A simple clarification from your instructor can reduce your anxiety about an assignment and increase your confidence in your ability to do the work.
Being a student in any setting can be challenging. The self-discipline, confidence, and time management skills that are required to be successful in an online course are not something that every student can handle. If taking a course online makes a student extremely uncomfortable then the student should consider taking the course in the traditional classroom setting instead. That being said, it is definitely possible to have success as an online student.

Staying motivated in school can be difficult for many college students, especially when the workload accumulates. Thoughts like “is it worth it?” and “I don’t need to study, there is extra credit” start to become validate lack of motivation. But, there are ways around the second semester lull.
Many students utilize a variety of techniques to keep themselves from losing motivation, varying from personal pep talks to task scheduling. Freshman Eryn Jacobson said she stays motivated through “knowing that someday all my hard work will pay off.” Students need to remember that school is ultimately a ticket to the career they hope to attain someday. Others may require an educational energy boost.
“I give myself small pep talks every once and while,” said freshman Soren Toby, grinning. “Study groups definitely motivate me to try harder, too.” Study groups are not uncommon in the more difficult classes, especially among friends. These study groups help students realize they are not the only one drowning in a sea of homework and also make studying more enjoyable. However, study groups may not work for everyone; some students prefer to work on their assignments independently by sticking to a regimented homework schedule.
“I try to do my homework in small doses throughout the week so that I am not stuck with a tidal wave of homework the night before thing are due. This way I don’t get burnt out or discouraged,” said freshman Nicole Gates. Time management can be a very difficult concept for some students to execute successfully, but if they have the discipline to avoid procrastination it can help keep motivation levels high and the work load manageable.
“Running and God keep me going,” said junior Troy Kelly. For some students, focusing only on the academic aspect of attending school is not enough to keep them motivated; instead, focusing on the broad reasons they selected York College in the first place works better.
There are many ways to stay motivated throughout the year, but finding what technique fits best is the key to success.

In an increasingly desensitized society being part of something that has a firm moral foundation is difficult to come by, especially when it comes to online collegiate education. It may be difficult for students to adjust from being in a face-to-face learning environment to an online learning environment. Fortunately, we offer key tricks to help smooth the transition.
Students should prepare for their new environment. Online courses may be difficult to navigate for some students, so it is important to do the tutorials that are provided in your courses so you can become more familiar with how they work. Time management is also important in becoming a successful online student. Although in many classroom settings people can still be successful by procrastinating, the same won’t apply in an online setting. To keep procrastination at bay, create a schedule for your assignments and exams and put it where it will be seen on a daily basis. Furthermore, make it part of your daily routine to check class websites and your email. Since online learning is more independent, the social aspect of this environment is sometimes overlooked; it is important to introduce yourself to classmates. This small social interaction can help you find “study buddies” and will most likely help you stay focused and accountable throughout your online learning experience.

Often the tasks in a student’s daily life can become so consuming they drag determination to see things through to completion to a grinding halt. There are papers to write, studying to be done and presentations to prepare. It’s easy to become overwhelmed to the point that students don’t know where to begin, which can lead to not beginning anything–except maybe composing a status update or breaking out a mobile device and wiping out a few green pigs.
Procrastination is a bad habit and like any other bad habit, it doesn’t develop overnight. It occurs in small instances over time, until one day we look back and realize just how frequently it has managed to take hold. Procrastination is the primary reason students end up pulling late-night, deadline-hugging, assignment-completion marathons.
Most online courses are adaptations of traditional, 16-week face-to-face courses that have been accelerated to last between five and eight weeks. With such a truncated timetable, if a student procrastinates by as little as a few days they can find themselves far enough behind that it can quickly become overwhelming; opening the door for procrastination.
Students intentionally put themselves in this position; they are just like anyone else and sometimes become inundated to the point of exasperation. This can happen to professors and other professionals just as easily as it can to students. As a wise professor from York College once said, “Those moments [of feeling overwhelmed and procrastinating as a result] help me realize what some of our students go through, who have a lot on their plates and sometimes don’t get to things they really intended to get done”.
Being proactive and tackling tasks one at a time can ease the feeling of being overwhelmed. It is important to keep tasks in their proper perspective and not allow emotions to cloud the ability to push through and get things completed.

It is important not to overwork yourself. You may have many responsibilities on your mind that can eventually lead to exhaustion. Make sure to prioritize the obligations that require the most of your energy.
Untidiness, tight clothes and negativity are a few common energy drainers. A messy environment can distract you and ultimately become another stressor. Working in a clutter-free environment helps eliminate distractions. If you do not have time to tidy up, study in a different location that has fewer distractions, such as a library or a coffee shop.
Tight clothes can be uncomfortable. If you are an online student who takes courses from home, wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes to help you power through your work.
Stress from school, friends and family can accumulate and cause you to feel overwhelmed by negative feelings; this is when you need to politely tell the people around you that you will have to talk to them at a later time. Junk food can also add to stress because it takes a toll on your health and decreases your motivation. Make sure to eat well-balanced meals throughout the day that will boost your energy.
Overall, take care of yourself; you will find it makes difficulties much easier to tackle.

Unorganized emails quickly can turn into a mess. After your in-box becomes cluttered, you may start deleting mail as you receive it. This can be a huge mistake, especially for online students who do not make it to campus to see bulletin boards and flyers.
Emails you should not delete:
- University newsletters: Newsletters let you know campus news and upcoming events that could benefit you.
- Technology updates: You do not want to be working on an assignment when the server shuts down for maintenance. Make sure to keep emails from your school’s information technology (IT) department so that you have important technology information.
- Information from professors: It helps to keep emails from your professors as reference points to verify assignment details.
- University activities and sessions: These emails can serve as a great way to participate in different online activities and connect with your classmates.
- Letters from the provost and president: Updates from your school leaders give you valuable information about their opinions and plans for the school.
Make sure you are not quick to delete any emails that you may need in the future. However, you should not let your emails accumulate, either. Try to create folders as you receive emails so that you do not find yourself looking at a cluttered in-box every time you log in.
